President's Report

Earlier this month, SEAOSD proudly hosted our annual Student Night, bringing together students, professionals, and educators for an evening focused on inspiration, mentorship, and the future of structural engineering. The event was highlighted by a powerful keynote address from Dr. Ashraf Habibullah of CSI, who also generously served as the Anchor sponsor for the evening.

Dr. Ashraf’s message resonated deeply with everyone in attendance—especially the students. His passion for education and his genuine love for students were evident throughout his talk. He reminded us that while software, analysis, and codes are critical tools, our profession is ultimately about people.  It’s about the students entering the field, the mentors who guide them, and the communities who rely on safe, thoughtful design. His message was both a call to purpose and an encouragement to the next generation to embrace the meaning behind the work.

One of the central themes of the evening was why structural engineering is so incredible. Dr. Ashraf spoke about how humans are uniquely created to help improve the lives of others—and structural engineers do exactly that. Whether we are designing hospitals, schools, bridges, or homes, our work directly supports communities and enables society to thrive.

He emphasized that structural engineers make lives better—often in ways that are invisible but always essential. We preserve history by strengthening and protecting existing structures, while also building the future through innovation and thoughtful design. From seismic retrofits to resilient new construction, the work of structural engineers quite literally saves lives.

Dr. Ashraf also offered a powerful perspective on legacy. Every monument still standing today—every building that has endured time, earthquakes, and storms—stands because of engineers who cared deeply about their work and the people it served. As he noted, “Every monument that is standing is standing because of you.” It was a humbling reminder of the responsibility and impact carried by our profession.

SEAOSD would like to thank Dr. Ashraf and CSI and all of our sponsors for their continued support of students and the profession, as well as everyone who attended and helped make Student Night such a success. Events like this remind us why we do what we do—and why investing in students is an investment in the future of structural engineering.

This is the NCSEA SE3 Committee’s fourth nationwide survey targeted at structural engineers. The responses collected are valuable in understanding trends in our profession. SE3’s mission is to attract and retain the best and brightest into our profession; and to ensure ALL structural engineers have a clear pathway to success. The SE3 survey is an ongoing effort to identify trends, understand the underlying factors, and initiate industry-wide conversations. Findings from past iterations of this survey included insight into why engineers leave the profession, the importance of mentorship, and the existence of a nuanced gender pay gap.
