President's Report

"The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” – Steven Spielberg
October was a challenging month for my family and me, as we said goodbye to my father after his courageous 18-month battle with ALS. He was 79 years old—a hero, a mentor, and a source of inspiration who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
As a mentor, my father had a rare gift: he saw people not just as they were, but as they could be. He believed everyone holds the potential for greatness, and his conversations left others feeling inspired to be better—at home and at work. For him, mentoring wasn’t a task; it was a calling.
I’m encouraged to see that same spirit reflected in SEAOSD’s recent mentoring initiatives. In October, our Student Liaison Committee (SLC) and Younger Member Forum (YMF) successfully launched their Mentorship Program. Earlier this month, the Women in Structural Engineering (WiSE) group hosted a well-attended Speed Mentoring event. These activities embody the energy and culture that make SEAOSD special.
Much like Shakespeare’s words on mercy—“It blesseth him that gives and him that takes”—mentoring enriches both mentor and mentee. I invite you to engage more fully with SEAOSD, its committees, and its events. Together, we can continue to inspire and elevate one another.

Committee Updates

SE3 Committee

SEAOSD SE3 hosted a speed mentorship event at Novo Brewing on September 23rd where 30+ members were able to meet and network over some drinks and appetizers. The event offered younger SEAOSD members the unique opportunity to ask questions, engage in discussion, and make new connections with mentors at various stages of their careers. Discussions revolved around topics such as technical development, work life balance, and business development. SE3 is aiming to make this an annual event in the fall so be on the lookout for our next event!

Seismology Committee

The SEAOSD seismology committee met on Tuesday October 7th from 5 to 6:30 pm. We discussed the new BSSC Professional Organization Ballots (P.O. Ballots #5), Fall 2025, which if approved will be implemented in 2028 edition of ASCE 7. We discussed each ballot in the figure below in significant detail, formed our opinion and decided on our final vote. We placed our vote on BSSC website on Friday, October 24th.

Wise Committee

The SEAOSD WiSE hosted a Women’s Speed Mentoring Event aimed at fostering connections among women in engineering on November 6, 2025 at BWE Office. Mentees participated in small group rotations for short conversations with experienced engineers to gain insights and perspectives. The event provided a supportive environment for participants to ask questions and engage in open dialogue. It was an excellent networking opportunity for students and early-career professionals to build lasting mentoring relationships. The event was generously hosted by BWE, who will provide refreshments for attendees.

YMF & SLC Committee

The YMF and SLC Committee held their Mentorship Kickoff event on October 21, 2025 at the Rabbit Hole. The event aimed to facilitate connections between students and young professionals in the structural engineering field. Students had the opportunity to meet potential mentors who could guide them in their career paths, making this a significant networking occasion.
