President's Report

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome SEAOSD to 2021! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are coming back from the break refreshed and ready to start the New Year.
The New Year is the time when we reflect on our past efforts, so I’d like to highlight one of the long-term endeavors of our organization. The first thing that I think of when I look back at the great things that SEAOC has done over the years is the unassuming Blue Book that I was handed when I joined SEAOSD fifteen years ago. That book, published for over 60 years by the Seismology Committee, is at the forefront of seismic design, first as a model for code requirements, then evolving to provide detailed commentary and best practices. It is an amazing reference used the world over and a testament to the incredible work that our organization has produced over the years. This month, Jeremy Callister, former chair of SEAOC’s Seismology Committee, will be presenting on the past, present, and future of the Blue Book at this month’s member meeting. I encourage you all to attend and learn about what our organization continues to produce.
The New Year is also the time where we plan for a better and brighter the future. Our Association’s future lies with the new crop of engineers that are currently in school, from the university all the way down to primary school. Next month is our annual Student Night, where we get to connect with and mentor the next generation of engineers. It is also when SEAOSD will award substantial scholarships to a few of the students in attendance. The funding that we provide to the students would not be possible without the help of our members, so I urge you to support Student Night as you have in years past. For our student members, I encourage you all to apply for the scholarships if you haven’t already and sign up for the event. The format for this year is obviously going to be a bit different than in previous years, but we have some really cool things in the planning that will allow us all to interact and mingle as freely as we would in person. I’m really excited for the event and I look forward to gathering with you all virtually in February.
In closing, I would like to remind you to please reach out to me or any member of the Board if you have any feedback on the Association’s work or have any ideas on how we can provide better value for our membership in the upcoming year.
Take care and stay safe!
