President's Report

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello and welcome to the Holidays, whether you are ready for them or not!

Over this past weekend I was watching one of ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentaries, The Day the Series Stopped, about a couple of subjects that are near and dear to my heart.  As a child of the late 1980’s growing up in the Bay Area, nothing was more important to me than baseball, and when both of the local baseball teams met up in the 1989 World Series, needless to say it was the only thing that mattered, at least until it didn’t matter anymore.  At 5:04 PM on October 17th, the earth decided to move and the most devastating earthquake to hit the Bay Area in 83 years put things into overwhelming perspective, even for a 7-year-old like me.

I was watching this documentary with my 4-year old son, and he was peppering me with questions like only a 4-year old can, and while I was explaining to him what he was seeing on the screen, I was hit with a huge wave of gratitude.  Gratitude for my health, for my family, and for my chosen profession.  I got to explain to him that what he was seeing is why his Mom (who is also an SE) and Dad do what we do:  to protect life, to promote public safety, to make sure that the destruction that happened in the Marina District, the Bay Bridge, the Cypress Structure, and the Pacific Gardens Mall does not happen again.  I got to show him our job in action:  the precast roof of the upper bowl of Candlestick Park was recently retrofitted before the earthquake and survived, protecting untold thousands of people in the stadium; the upper deck of the Bay Bridge was not yet retrofitted and partially collapsed.

I also got to show him direct examples how good and heroic ordinary people can be. The factory workers who climbed the Cypress Structure after it collapsed and helped pull people out of the wreckage were not on the clock.  They jumped to action because they knew it was the right thing to do.  It is so important for all of us to reminded of the virtues of empathy and courage and to pass those traits on to the next generation.  The Golden Rule is golden for a reason.

As we approach the holidays, I hope you have a chance to take stock of your life and have gratitude for what you have, where you live, and what you do, and pay it forward to those that are less fortunate.  As Structural Engineers, we play a vital role in the safety of our communities, and I hope you all are grateful for, and take advantage of, your opportunity to make your world a better place.  Hopefully it doesn’t take the 31st anniversary of an event 83 years in the making to remind you of the significance of your part in providing the framework for our society.

Please reach out to me or any member of the Board if you have any feedback on the Association’s work or have any ideas on how we can provide better value for our membership.

Take care and stay safe!
