President's Report

Hello and welcome to October!

Although it is 97 degrees while I write this, hopefully fall (or at least what passes for it in Southern California) will soon be in the air.

I’d like to thank all of our members for the awesome turnout at last month’s virtual meeting, and really all of our meetings in general, since we have transitioned to our new format.  Turnout has also been impressive at our committee meetings and we at SEAOSD are very appreciative of how you all have embraced the challenge of staying involved with the engineering community while being distanced from your offices.  I would like to highlight a couple more opportunities for you all to get involved so we can keep this momentum rolling into Autumn months.

In support of the Call To Action put out earlier this year by NCSEA and supported by SEAOC, NCSEA is putting on a series of webinars designed to educate it members about the importance of inclusion and diversity within our chosen profession.  Hopefully, you all were aware of and got a chance to attend the first session on September 29th and are planning on attending the second session on October 13th.  If not, NCSEA is making recordings of the presentations available on their website at the link below.  I hope you all make time to attend.

Registration for the rescheduled 2020 SEAOC Convention is about to reopen!  The Convention has moved to a virtual format and will offer up the same great educational opportunities as previous years but from the comfort of your own home!  Alright, I know it is hard to replace a trip to Maui, but we must make do until we are free to move about the country again.    Also, the format hopefully encourages a lot more people that traditionally have not made the pilgrimage to attend a day or at least a session. Save the dates of December 2nd – 4th, 2020 and look for more information from SEA News and the SEAOC Convention Committee.

I would like to remind everyone about our next member meeting on October 20th at 12:00 PM, where we will have Stephen Shang, CEO of Falcon Structures, presenting about navigating the building codes for shipping container based modular structures.    Please also visit our web page for additional information regarding future meetings and events.

Lastly, one final reminder to renew your membership, if you have not done so already, because we do not want you to miss out on all these awesome activities! Please reach out to me or any member of the Board if you have any feedback on the Association’s work or have any ideas on how we can provide better value for our membership.

Take care and stay safe!
