President's Report

Today, as I sit down to write this message, it is Groundhog Day, the day where the whole country waits with bated breath for an overgrown squirrel from western Pennsylvania to tell us when the weather will turn for the better.  While I’m sure most of us in the southland were happy to hear that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow (because we could sure use the rain that six more weeks of winter will bring), I think the vast majority of us would also, metaphorically speaking, wish for an early spring to end the limbo that has settled in since the pandemic struck.  We’ve all been like Phil Connors, Bill Murray’s character from the movie Groundhog Day, frozen in time, feeling like we are living the same day over and over and waiting to be released from a never-ending winter.

Well, there are signs that the thaw is starting to happen, so why not celebrate the metaphorical coming of an early spring by joining us at our annual Student Night on February 23rd at 5 PM!  This year’s event will be hosted on Gather, a virtual venue that allows us to have the mingling and free-flowing conversations that those of us who have participated in years past have really grown to appreciate.  This will not be your typical virtual event and I really encourage you to support the future of our organization while reconnecting with some of your peers you haven’t been able to see in person for the last year.  Details regarding the format will be posted on our website.  I strongly suggest checking out the site, ahead of time, as well as logging into the meeting from a computer with a headset instead of a phone.

To the students that are joining us at Student Night, our members hope to give you a warm welcome into the field of structural engineering.  We are all looking forward to connecting with you and hopefully introducing you to your future employers and peers while giving you a taste of what this amazing Association has to offer.

I am extremely happy to announce that, due to a generous donation from Computers & Structures Inc. (CSI), we have been able to double our scholarship program for the year!  Thank you to Ashraf and his team for their generosity.  Thanks as well to all of our program sponsors who have already pledged their support to this year’s Student Night.  I hope your firm joins the growing list of firms that have donated to the cause.  Our scholarship program and other activities are funded solely by the participation of our membership, so I encourage you to support our students and our organization.

I would also like to announce our call for nominees for our incoming Board of Directors is now open.  We have two Directors positions and the Vice President position that will need to be filled by our changing of the Board in July.  Please contact anyone on the Board if you have interest in taking a more active role in our Association.

In closing, I would like to remind you to please reach out to me or any member of the Board if you have any feedback on the Association’s work or have any ideas on how we can provide better value for our membership in the upcoming year.

Take care, stay safe, and “Don’t drive angry”!
