President's Report

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Congratulations!  You’ve made it to the end of a year that just about everyone would like to put in our rear-view mirror!

First, I’d like to thank all those that reached out to me in response to last month’s President’s Message.  I really appreciated the positive feedback and I’m glad so many of you connected with my story.

The end of the year is the season for giving, and in this crazy year of 2020, it is more important than ever to be generous.  The generosity I speak of does not necessarily have to do with money, but more with generosity of time, effort, and spirit.  We have spent the last nine months living behind masks, afraid of being near our fellow humans and limiting our interactions with the outside world.  We need to remind ourselves that the shrouded beings we pass on our ventures out in public are our fellow human beings, dealing with all the same issues we are.  They are just as deserving of your warmth, kindness, and time as they did before all of this pandemic driven paranoia set in.  So, even though you may not be able to see the expressions on their faces, say and wave ‘hi’ to those you pass on the street on your nightly walk.  Make the time to help out your favorite cause even if you need to do it remotely. Put forth the effort to make your part of the world a better place, and, if you can afford to be fiscally generous, by all means do so.

Now, if you are looking for a place to donate your hard-earned money, may I suggest the SEAOC Foundation?   The SEAOC Foundation is our organization’s 501(c)3 that was established to fund scholarship programs, technical publications, and research projects that promote and advance the field of structural engineering.  One of the initiatives to be funded is a scholarship being established for students from historically underrepresented communities.  Though all of the details have yet to have been worked out, I am definitely encouraged that SEAOC’s Call to Action is being acted upon and I encourage you all to support this endeavor.

Speaking of SEAOC, I hope all of you were able to attend the first Virtual SEAOC Convention over the last week.  While the format was a little different, the quality of the presentations were as good as ever and I’m proud that the organization was able to quickly adapt to the times and put on a great convention.  I’d like to recognize SEAOSD members that won awards at the SEAOC Excellence in Structural Engineering (EISE) Awards:

  • Award of Merit Winner: Amp&rsand, submitted by Coffman Engineers

  • Award of Excellence Winner: Prescott Prayer Chapel at PLNU, submitted by KPFF Consulting Engineers.

Congratulations to both firms for representing San Diego so well at the state level and thank you to all the firms that participated!  In case you missed the awards ceremony, we will be posting a link on the website to the recording of the EISE Awards and the Inductions to the SEAOC College of Fellows.  I encourage all of you to participate in next year’s edition of the EISE.  If you are proud of the work that you do, show it off!  We want to see the great work that our SEAOSD members are doing and make sure that it is properly recognized.

In closing, I’d like to remind you to please reach out to me or any member of the Board if you have any feedback on the Association’s work or have any ideas on how we can provide better value for our membership.

I wish you all an amazing holiday season and a very prosperous and COVID-free New Year.  See you all in 2021--may it be nothing like the year that proceeded it!

Take care and stay safe!
