President's Report

……and we’re back!

Greetings to all our SEAOSD members!  I would like to welcome all of you back from what has probably been one of the most unique summers of your lives.  I am humbled and honored to be serving as your President for the 2020-2021 year and am looking forward to all of the great things we can do together while I am in this role.

Now that we’ve gone through all of the formalities, I would like to give you a glimpse of what SEAOSD has planned for the year ahead.  A volunteer organization like SEAOSD is only as strong as the members who support and participate in its activities, and the membership is only interested in supporting and participating in said activities if they feel they are receiving something of value (which means something different to everyone).  Our goal is to make sure that every person who chooses to be a member of SEAOSD sees a return on their investment, whether it is by networking with fellow engineers or prospective employers, getting educated about the latest advancements in engineering practices, tapping into the connections and resources we have with SEAOC and governing jurisdictions, or making a difference in our chosen profession and our community.  I want our members to be inspired to participate in an organization that is doing great things to help improve our communities and the built environment.

So, how do we at SEAOSD hope to inspire our members to contribute?  It starts through engagement of all our members.  Our first initiative regarding engagement (I’ll detail the others in subsequent messages so this doesn’t turn into the Moby Dick of SEA-News) is to make it simpler for our members to participate in the educational opportunities that SEAOSD provides.  When COVID-19 threw us all for a loop last spring, it forced us to rapidly transition to a virtual platform for our monthly meetings and educational seminars.  What was a necessity is now an opportunity for us to permanently increase engagement with our members who historically have had a hard time making it to our in person meetings, as well as reach out to those outside our area who may be unfamiliar with SEAOSD and what we do.  While our monthly meetings will eventually become in-person lunch or dinner meetings again, we will make sure that there will be, going forward, a virtual aspect to the meeting so that those who can’t make the trek down to Liberty Station will not miss out.  We are also recording the presentations (when we get permission to do so) and providing them on our YouTube page as a resource to our members.

Speaking of meetings, I would like to remind everyone about our next member meeting on September 15th at 12:00 PM, where we will have Mike Romanowski, Regional Director with Woodworks, presenting on new code provisions regarding the use of tall wood buildings.  Please also visit our web page for additional information regarding future meetings and events.

Before I finish today, I would be remiss if I did not thank those who have taken the time to serve on our previous Board.  Outgoing President Casey Whitsett did an amazing job while he was in this position last year and has left very large shoes to fill.  I would also like to give special thanks to Steven Crook, who is coming off the board after serving as our Past-President; Chad Closs, who has finished his term as Treasurer and is moving on to serve as Treasurer for the 2021 SEAOC Convention; and outgoing Directors Jose Restrepo and Aaron Pebley.  Without their time and effort, our organization would not be in such a? great shape and I thank them very much for it.

I would also like to congratulate and commend the fresh faces to the Board, Bo Jaquess, our incoming Vice President; Harshda Prasad, our new Treasurer; and Directors Matthew Wexler and Garrett Mifsud.  Welcome to the team!  Thank you also to Aaron Taylor and Jon Deck, who are sticking around for another year as Directors; and especially Heather Caya, our Executive Director, who keeps all the trains running on time and this whole Association organized.  I am looking forward to working with you all!

Lastly, we do not have a membership organization without members, so if you have not done so already, please take a moment to renew your membership.  As we start our new fiscal year and move out of 2020, our organization remains financially strong and we look forward to providing our members with the greatest benefit possible.  Please reach out to me or any member of the Board if you have any feedback on the Association’s work or have any ideas on how we can provide better value for our membership.

Take care and stay safe!
