SEAOSD July 2020 Newsletter Print

President's Report

Hello, SEAOSD!

Our July newsletter closes out SEAOSD’s year before we take a summer recess and restart programs in September. We’ve covered a lot of ground this year, to say the least, and by my math I think our association has had few more surprises to roll with than an average twelve months. Amid a pandemic, potential economic crisis, national protests and remote working, our members have also been ‘minding the shop’, keeping clients happy, and designing safe and reliable structures. This year especially, we have cause to celebrate each and every member who volunteered their limited and already stretched time to keep SEAOSD vibrant and effective. Your efforts have made a real impact and SEAOSD owes you a debt of gratitude.

Prof. Jose Restrepo (Director), Aaron Pebley (Director), Chad Closs (Treasurer) and Steven Crook (Past-President) have each finished their terms on the board. Thank you all for the past years dedicated to SEAOSD. You’ve strengthened our bridge to academia, invested passion and leadership, been outstanding stewards and all while serving with empathy, character and insight.

Heather Caya, SEAOSD’s Executive Administrator, has continued to be a vital resource for both our board and organization. Thank you for your diligence and help in so many ways, from membership drives to meeting minutes and much more.

Those serving on committees, especially committee chairs, have been outstanding this year and it has been a pleasure to hear the committee voices and activities highlighted in the newsletter each month. You have been active and ambitious, and because of you our membership has benefited greatly. We’re looking forward to honoring your efforts and achievements at our July 21st meeting. Keep up the fantastic work and momentum!

While all our committees have had a lot of adapting to do, I want to specifically recognize two who were most impacted by the pandemic this year. First, our Golf Tournament planning was complete when we were forced to cancel. I’m so sorry your efforts were spent without getting to hold what I’m sure would have been a stellar event. Second, our Awards Committee went to work this year aiming to revamp the 2020 awards ceremony into a high-end industry networking gala. This has obviously been put on the shelf as well. I’m looking forward to next year when SEAOSD hopefully gets to reap the fruits of that labor. Thank you for adapting and making sure that our terrific EiSE awards are still celebrated this year, albeit virtually!

Welcome to our 2020-2021 SEAOSD Board lead by Stephen Spence (President), continuing members Aaron Taylor (Director), Jon Deck (Director), Casey Whitsett (Past-President) and new board members Bo Jaquess (Vice-President), Harshda Prasad (Treasurer), Matthew Wexler (Director), and Garrett Mifsud (Director).

It is impossible to adequately summarize what has been a massive roller-coaster of a year, but as I reflect, it stands out to me that we are blessed to be an association filled with professional problem solvers. Having engineers at hand when crisis and disruption strikes is not something every professional association benefits from. It has been an honor to serve in the president role when we needed all our problem solvers on deck. Thank you, SEAOSD, for what has been a surprising but excellent year! I’m guessing Mr. Spence is going to ask all those problem solvers to go ahead and remain on deck for next year, so let’s stay involved, continue to roll with the surprises and improve SEAOSD along the way.
