President's Report

Hello, SEAOSD. Thank you everyone who joined us for our May remote lunch meeting which featured Tony Court and Peter Maloney giving a dual presentation on the recent issuance of the San Diego Earthquake Scenario and SEAOSD EBC’s work in developing San Diego’s vulnerable building inventory. We had an outstanding turnout, which is revealing that a silver lining of the stay at home orders is that the convenience of virtual presentations has opened them up to more members. The San Diego Earthquake Scenario is a sobering prediction of what the overall impacts to San Diego’s infrastructure and economy may be when we see a design level earthquake on the Rose Canyon fault. Additionally, focusing specifically on buildings, the Vulnerable Building Inventory is a powerful dataset for our association to use in advocating for seismic hazard mitigation ordinances in our city. I highly recommend that each of our members get familiar with both. Luckily, if you missed the presentation or would like to revisit it, we have a recording for you. Check it out at SEAOSD’s new YouTube Channel:
SEAOSD May 19, 2020 Meeting – San Diego Earthquake Scenario and Vulnerable Building Inventory
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, June 23 (lunch webinar). We will be recognizing our Excellence in Engineering Awards submissions and winners in addition to hosting a technical presentation (to be announced shortly). An impressive group of projects have been submitted and our Awards Committee is underway with judging. Keep an eye out for the People’s Choice Ballot and vote for your favorite! I also want to specially recognize our Awards Committee, led by Laith Quntar, who put in a tremendous effort this year to plan an enhanced EiSE Awards Gala for SEAOSD, aimed at growing our awards event into a high-end industry gala and raising the notoriety of the EiSE Award, the winners, and San Diego SEs in general. We’ll be rolling those plans forward to next year when we can all cheers in person!
SEAOSD Board Nominations and Ballot have been emailed out to members. Please take the time to review and vote. Thanks to each of our members who have stepped up to potentially serve on the board!
Finally, I’d like to get back to highlighting our amazing committees each month. This year our Young Member Forum has been terrific in the amount of enthusiasm and community that been fostered for SEAOSD. Massive thanks to our current co-chairs Suong Chong (KPFF) and Christine Drummy (Coffman), in addition to our previous chair, Daniel Menno (DPR). Take it away, guys…
SEAOSD Young Members Forum (YMF) provides a community for up and coming engineers (both students and young professionals) to collaborate, learn, and build together. We host lectures by experienced professionals, happy hours to bond and network, and fundraisers to help strengthen organizations that strive to attain goals in line with the Structural Engineers Association.
This year we have been continuing our mentorship program with local college engineering students as well as hosting a student night dinner in February and co-hosting the annual EPIC mixer in March along with AIA and ASHRAE for Emerging Professionals in the Community (proceeds were donated to the Women’s Construction Coalition and the Julia Morgan Society). This month we have been challenging our mentor/mentee pairs to meet virtually in order to continue building bonds from home. Next month we have a June 11th virtual event with Danielle Luster, president and advisor with Bamboo wealth strategies, to discuss basic financial planning and learn more about how to manage finances during such an unstable time.
YMF typically hosts happy hour meetups at local breweries, but due to COVID-19 we will continue to provide opportunities for our young members to stay connected and engage remotely. For more information or to become a member or virtual lecturer, please contact co-chairs Suong Chong

Have a great month, SEAOSD!
