SEAOSD December 2019 Newsletter Print

President's Report

Hello, SEAOSD and happy end to 2019!  If you missed it, last month we hosted Prof. John Wallace from UCLA to introduce changes coming in the ACI 318-19. December will be our joint meeting with ASCE coming up next week on December 17th, where we’ll be treated to a presentation on Seismic Design of Transit Stations for the LAX People Mover Project. Don’t forget the location as at the Hilton in Mission Valley, not Stone Brewing this month!

Special thanks are due this month to the SEAOSD members who made the effort to attend the recent NCSEA Summit in Anaheim. I want to specifically recognize Curtis Patterson who represented our MO as an NCSEA delegate. He’s brought back a number of national NCSEA resources available for our local MO’s use and some of my favorite feedback… that “SEAOSD is doing a ton right and is really a leader on a national level”. Go SEAOSD!  Our SE3 Committee also sent delegates to the NCSEA SE3 Symposium, so keep an eye out for more as that group continues to ramp up.

This month I also want to highlight our Student Liaison Committee. Something that may not stand out to everyone is that, for the first time in recent memory, this is a ‘committee’ and not a single individual…which is soooo cool! Chaired by Angelene Taduran, we have a fantastic group of engineers who are helping out, so thank you all! Angelene, take it away and remind everyone what they can do to support you guys:

The Student Liaison Committee is an excellent and fun way to get involved with SEAOSD and serve some of the most talented and enthusiastic structural engineering students in our community. One of the primary benefits of student membership is the opportunity to interact with experienced professionals in the structural engineering field. The Student Liaison Committee holds the best position to facilitate this valuable interaction by communicating information between the association and the students, and assisting the students in making contact with members of the association that can impart valuable knowledge and provide exposure to our profession, in an effort to support the students’ professional development and help them become successful structural engineers.

The participation and contribution from our members and company leaders are vital key to the success of our committee. The best way to become involved with the Student Liaison Committee is through a number of volunteer opportunities throughout the year-- You can join us at student group tours, become a mentor for the Student Mentorship Program (a program we run in partnership with YMF), host a student for a day through the Job Shadow Program, attend meetings and career fairs at UCSD and SDSU as a SEAOSD representative, help advertise the scholarship program and select scholarship recipients, or assist in planning and running SEAOSD’s annual Student Night with Industry on Feb. 25, 2020. Our goal this year is to host at least (4) student group tours and we are currently looking for projects in construction and engineering offices to visit in the winter and in the spring—If your company has a project in construction that you would like to volunteer for a job site tour, or if your company is interested in hosting an engineering office tour, please let me know!

If you are interested in joining the committee or volunteering for any of our events, please contact me, Angelene Taduran, at [email protected] for details!

Overall, as we transition to the new year, I couldn’t be more impressed with our organization and the energy our membership has brought out so far this year. Here’s to wishing you and yours a merry and restful holiday!

Best-

Casey Whitsett, S.E.
