President's Report

Hola, SEAOSD! We had a great meeting to kick off our program last month in September. Prof. Shiling Pei visited us from the Colorado School of Mines to present the latest testing for the NHERI Tall Wood Project, much of which was conducted at the UCSD’s Englekirk shake table. Mass timber rocking shear walls were highlighted that provided not just lateral resistance but also drift correction with minimal damage, which was impressive from a resiliency standpoint. Prof. Pei shared that their next plans are to test a full 10-story mass timber building at UCSD, so keep an eye out for that!
Our next meeting will be a lunch on Tuesday, October 15th, with a presentation on the 2019 CBC Seismic Updates and Application of Site-Specific Seismic Hazard Analysis. Reason #47 to love SEAOSD: I know there’s a whole community of you who, just like me, look at that title and think, “Cool!!”. Come join us, it’s a safe space to nerd out!
Other SEAOSD happenings you should be aware of:
- The NCSEA Summit is coming up November 12-15 in Anaheim. The event is open to all members who want to attend, but specific thanks are due to Curtis Patterson, who, if you didn’t know, is our delegate to NCSEA. Thank you, Curtis, for representing SEAOSD!
- San Diego is hosting the 2021 SEAOC Convention and the planning committees for that event are ramping up. Speaking from experience, no joke, this is one of the most fun ways to be get involved with SEAOSD. Contact Steve Kerr to find out more, you won’t regret it.
- Our Young Member Forum is looking for mentors to sign up for our UCSD Mentorship Program.
- Our SE3 Committee is hosting a meeting on October 29th on “How to Prepare for an Interview, Negotiate Salary, and Ask for Raise”.
That’s a list that makes me smile. It’s only a snapshot of what SEAOSD is going to do this year, but already a testament of what great people this organization has. Thank you, all!
To close out the president’s message this month, let me introduce Scott Larson, who has brought an impressive passion and consistency to our Business Forum Committee (BFC). To his credit, Scott has managed the committee solo for the past 5 years but needs help to grow this committee to 4-5 members. If you’re a firm owner, want to be a firm owner someday, or just care about getting paid and not getting sued, this is where you need to be! Scott, take it away:
Business Forum Committee provides SEAOSD members with resources and presentations from experts that address the essentials of starting, maintaining, and transitioning a design firm. It is founded on the understanding that most engineers are not trained in business matters. In fact, engineers often ‘don’t know what they don’t know’ when it comes to business. BFC is here to help fill that gap and provide business practices that can most help them succeed. This year, we’re aiming to provide 3 presentations for SEOASD members.
Contact me at [email protected] or 619 344 2508 if you have business topics you’d like us to explore or to join BFC.
Have a great month, SEAOSD!

Ram Jack Sponsor
Remote Waterfront Villas on Secure Foundation
On the beautiful coastline of Golfito, Costa Rica, a large resort consisting of villas, a marina, shops, and more was planned for construction. Sitting right on the sands of the beach, the resort would need a reliable foundation. Project managers had designed a plan using steel sheet piles and gravel to raise the resort 12’; however, the lot rested on some 20’ of sand, so piles needed to be installed to reach load-bearing strata. Ram Jack Centro America was brought in and proposed installing helical piles to solve the problem. Over the course of 12 days, and through various alterations, Ram Jack installed 82 piles. The project manager was thoroughly pleased and planned to use Ram Jack for the next project phase.
