President's Report

April President’s Address

Happy Spring to you all, I hope everyone is enjoying the longer hours of daylight.  Thank you all who came to our Joint Meeting with ACI, it was a great turnout!  The joint meetings have continued to be a great opportunity to network within our industry and be informative as well. Jerzy Zemajtis provided a wonderful presentation on ACI Reference Specification.  A big THANK YOU to Jerzy who flew in from ACI Headquarters to provide the lecture.

Michael Braund has been working on putting the ballot together for elections.  If you would like to nominate yourself or another deserving candidate, please email your nomination to Michael Braund at: [email protected] please have your nominations in by the end of this month.  I can tell you firsthand that serving on the Board is a rewarding experience!

A reminder that the 2018 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards packets are due April 26th.  This is a wonderful way to showcase our local chapter’s engineering excellence.  Winners of the four local EiSE awards programs will be the only candidates considered for the State EiSE Awards program.  I look forward to seeing all the great projects our community is working on each year.  For a copy of the Awards Entry Packet go here:

SEAOSD Board of Directors recently voted to provide two stipends for our local membership to go to this year’s SEAOC convention.  If you plan on presenting at the conference, you are eligible for stipend money to help pay for Convention dues and travel expenses.  The Board approved the stipend to encourage more San Diego presenters at our State Conventions. This year’s Convention is being held at JW Marriott in Palm Desert.  Submit Convention Abstract to [email protected] to be consider before May 1, 2018.  Winners will be selected early May.

Our next meeting is a joint meeting with EERI on the 2017 Mexico City Earthquake Briefing and Lessons Learned.  On the 32nd anniversary of the 8.1 earthquake that devastated Mexico City on September 19, 1985, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred 120 km from Mexico City.  This September 19, 2017 earthquake resulted in approximately 44 collapsed buildings, over 1,000 damaged buildings, and 369 deaths.  Private firms, educational institutions, and research institutes sent reconnaissance teams to observe the damage and help local authorities with building assessments.  Members from three different organizations will provide a debrief and lessons learned.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Thank You,

Curtis Patterson, S.E.

SEAOSD President

SEAOSD Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards

SEAOSD Members: 2018 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards - Call For Entries

It’s not too early to start preparing for the 2018 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards!

Please click here to download the entry packet.
Need a word doc of the entry form click here.

Entries are due Thursday April 26th, 2018

The SEAOSD Awards entry process has been combined with the state level SEAOC Awards program as of 2017.  This new integrated program is now a two-tiered process to truly reveal the best of the best of structural engineering excellence in California.

The SEAOC/SEAOSD Awards entry fee is $150.  No additional entry fee will be required for advancement to the SEAOC Awards.

SEAOSD is proud to announce a few key changes this year…

1)      Projects must be submitted to the SEAOC/SEAOSD Awards program.  There will no longer be a separate application for the SEAOC Awards including past regional award recipients not previously submitted to the state level.

2)      Projects that win an Award of Excellence only at the SEAOSD Awards will be automatically advanced to the SEAOC Awards program.  Awards of Merit recipients will no longer be considered at the state level.

3)      The entry categories have been consolidated into (6) categories at the regional level, eliminating the Sustainability and Landmark categories.  The state level entry categories are further consolidated into (3) categories as outlined in the entry packet.

For questions and additional information, see the entry packet and/or contact the Awards Committee Chair, at [email protected].

Advertisement Policy

Dear Potential Sponsor/Donor:
The Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD) incorporated as a non-profit corporation on October 2, 1967, and has been serving San Diego Structural Engineers and the community ever since.  Our mission is to advance the structural engineering profession through the improvement of the quality of design and construction; to assist the public in obtaining professional structural engineering services; to promote natural hazard mitigation; to provide continuing education and encourage research; to provide Structural Engineers with the most current information and tools to improve their practice; and to maintain the honor and dignity of the profession.

On behalf of SEAOSD, I would like to formally invite you to participate in our advertising and sponsorship program.  Attached is our updated Advertising Policy that outlines a wide variety of options to choose from to fit your specific needs.  Given our association comprises over 300 members, this is an excellent opportunity to promote and reach out to the local engineering profession.  This includes job forum postings, displaying your business card in our Professional Directory, adding your company logo to our website, sponsoring one of our monthly member meetings, or participating in our annual golf tournament each spring.  There are also several sponsorship packages you may want to consider that offer discounted rates with a packaged deal.

I would like to emphasize that as a non-profit organization, your continued support is vital for our association to uphold our mission and advance the structural engineering profession.  This includes the ongoing work of our local and state committees ranging from structural standards development, sustainable design, public relations, advising local government, and business forum activities.  SEAOSD has also been heavily involved with student organizations, including job shadowing programs, awarding student scholarships, as well as hosting an annual “Student Night” that provides a unique opportunity for local college students to meet design professionals and learn more about the structural engineering profession.

If you would like to take advantage and benefit from these opportunities while also helping to strengthen our association, please contact our Executive Director, Heather Caya, at (619) 733-2734 or [email protected].  Please note that the Annual Sponsorship Program extends during SEAOSD’s fiscal year from July 1 to June 30, and a 10% discount is available for all sponsorship payments received by September 15, 2017.

Thank you again in advance for your support of our association.

The SE3 Survey is LIVE Now!

The SE3 Survey is LIVE NOW!

The NCSEA Structural Engineering Engagement and Equity (SE3) Committee is currently administering a nationwide survey of structural engineering professionals. This survey is designed to provide valuable information about our profession regarding demographics, compensation, satisfaction, and engagement. It will be one of the largest comprehensive nationwide surveys of structural engineering professionals to date, and we invite you to contribute to this project by completing the survey:

This project began in 2015 when SEAONC (Structural Engineers Association of Northern California) funded a committee to study engagement and equity in the structural engineering profession. In 2016, this group administered their first national survey of over 2,100 structural engineering professionals. Findings from this study included insight into why engineers leave the profession, the importance of mentorship, and the existence of a nuanced gender pay gap. To read the full report or get a quick summary, check out:

In mid-2017, an SE3 Committee was created at the national level through NCSEA with the primary goal of administering a similar nationwide study of structural engineering professionals every two years. This biennial survey will focus on measuring engagement and equity with the goal of providing data and best practices to help ensure that every structural engineering professional has a positive experience within our profession.

Over the past seven months, we’ve been developing the 2018 version of this survey, and it is now live! We would love to have your input. If you’d like to participate, the link to the survey is also available on the SE3 website at

The 2nd Annual Professional’s Mixer for AIA/SEAOSD/ASHRAEpresented by the emerging professionals  was on March 15th and it as a success with over 80+ participants.  Coincidentally, the Cal Poly’s Construction Management

Alumni Group had booked the 3rd cabana adjacent to us.  Together, our groups took over the outdoor patio and spent the evening, mingling, and cheering on our favorite college teams!  Needless to say, there was some friendly banter.

The Young Member Forum would like to send a special thank you out to our sponsors - Behr Paint, Hilti, Rick Engineering, as well as our co-hosts, AIA and ASHRAE, for making our event such a success! We can’t wait to for next year’s mixer, and hope fill up the Ballast Point’s outdoor patio once again.  Hope you will be able to join us then!  Cheers!
