President's Report

March President’s Address
Thank you to all that made Student Night such a success. We had a wonderful turnout and an entertaining presentation by CSI founder Ashraf Habibullah on the psychology of engineering; remember, because of your structural engineering, you save a life every time the wind blows. The evening included the award of three scholarships from SEAOSD to well-deserving students and that was possible thanks to the generous donations from our membership. A special thank you to Chad Closs and Lenard Tran for managing the scholarship program.
Thank you Again to our Student Night Sponsors:

Our March meeting will be a joint meeting with ACI on Reference Specifications: Unraveling Concrete Specs. This will be followed with a busy April which includes Post-Disaster Safety Assessment Evaluator Training Workshop (4/9) and our 17th Annual Golf Tournament (4/30). The space is limited at both events so please sign up in advance to secure your spot.
Did you know that the Seismic Design Map Tool will soon no longer be available on USGS.gov?
Our friends from the Structural Engineers Association of Central California (SEAOCC), provided a program that is now available to SEAOC members. As a member, you can access the free tool at: http://www.seaoc.org/page/seismicdesignmaptool.
Recently there has been some political will to make some changes to building design requirements. You may have seen the text of Assembly Bill 1857 and 2681 which is intended to have new building designed for immediate occupancy after a seismic event and to inventory potentially vulnerable buildings. The SEAOC Board had a long discussion regarding AB 1857 and took the position that it is time to support measures that improve building codes to achieve a performance objective greater than Life Safety as a code minimumto better align with public expectations. Ryan Kersting is our State Legislative Chair and has been actively advocating for SEAOC to have a say in Bills that relate to our industry.
Additionally, our state Professional Practices Committee has been busy updating our dated Professional Practice Handbook. If you are interested in having input or finding out more information, please contact our San Diego representative Scott Larson at [email protected]
I look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events.
Thank You,
Curtis Patterson, S.E.

Entries are due Thursday April 26th, 2018
Reminders:
The SEAOSD Awards entry process has been combined with the state level SEAOC Awards program as of 2017. This new integrated program is now a two-tiered process to truly reveal the best of the best of structural engineering excellence in California.
The SEAOC/SEAOSD Awards entry fee is $150. No additional entry fee will be required for advancement to the SEAOC Awards.
SEAOSD is proud to announce a few key changes this year…
1) Projects must be submitted to the SEAOC/SEAOSD Awards program. There will no longer be a separate application for the SEAOC Awards including past regional award recipients not previously submitted to the state level.
2) Projects that win an Award of Excellence only at the SEAOSD Awards will be automatically advanced to the SEAOC Awards program. Awards of Merit recipients will no longer be considered at the state level.
3) The entry categories have been consolidated into (6) categories at the regional level, eliminating the Sustainability and Landmark categories. The state level entry categories are further consolidated into (3) categories as outlined in the entry packet.
For questions and additional information, see the entry packet and/or contact the Awards Committee Chair, at [email protected].

Advertisement Policy
Dear Potential Sponsor/Donor:
The Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD) incorporated as a non-profit corporation on October 2, 1967, and has been serving San Diego Structural Engineers and the community ever since. Our mission is to advance the structural engineering profession through the improvement of the quality of design and construction; to assist the public in obtaining professional structural engineering services; to promote natural hazard mitigation; to provide continuing education and encourage research; to provide Structural Engineers with the most current information and tools to improve their practice; and to maintain the honor and dignity of the profession.
On behalf of SEAOSD, I would like to formally invite you to participate in our advertising and sponsorship program. Attached is our updated Advertising Policy that outlines a wide variety of options to choose from to fit your specific needs. Given our association comprises over 300 members, this is an excellent opportunity to promote and reach out to the local engineering profession. This includes job forum postings, displaying your business card in our Professional Directory, adding your company logo to our website, sponsoring one of our monthly member meetings, or participating in our annual golf tournament each spring. There are also several sponsorship packages you may want to consider that offer discounted rates with a packaged deal.
I would like to emphasize that as a non-profit organization, your continued support is vital for our association to uphold our mission and advance the structural engineering profession. This includes the ongoing work of our local and state committees ranging from structural standards development, sustainable design, public relations, advising local government, and business forum activities. SEAOSD has also been heavily involved with student organizations, including job shadowing programs, awarding student scholarships, as well as hosting an annual “Student Night” that provides a unique opportunity for local college students to meet design professionals and learn more about the structural engineering profession.
If you would like to take advantage and benefit from these opportunities while also helping to strengthen our association, please contact our Executive Director, Heather Caya, at (619) 733-2734 or [email protected]. Please note that the Annual Sponsorship Program extends during SEAOSD’s fiscal year from July 1 to June 30, and a 10% discount is available for all sponsorship payments received by September 15, 2017.
Thank you again in advance for your support of our association.
Sincerely,
Curtis Patterson, S.E.President
