President's Report
"If you seek his monument—look around you.”
Many years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to London and visit St. Paul’s Cathedral. Like many first-time visitors, I was struck not only by the grandeur of the structure itself, but also by the crypt below—a resting place for many of England’s most celebrated figures. The space is filled with elaborate and ornate monuments, each telling the story of a life deemed worthy of remembrance.
Yet in a quiet, nondescript corner of the crypt lies a markedly different memorial. A simple black granite tomb bears a modest inscription honoring the cathedral’s architect, Sir Christopher Wren. It reads, in part: “Here in its foundations lies the architect of this church and city… If you seek his monument—look around you.”
That line has stayed with me ever since.
As structural engineers, our legacy is rarely found in plaques or recognition carved in stone. Instead, it is embedded in the very fabric of the communities we help shape—the buildings we design, the resilience we create, and the trust we earn from the public. Our “monuments” are the schools that educate future generations, the hospitals that care for our communities, and the infrastructure that quietly supports everyday life.
Much like Wren, the true measure of our work is not what is written about us, but what stands because of us.
This perspective makes gatherings like the Structural Engineering Excellence (SEE) Awards especially meaningful. These awards provide a moment for our profession to pause and recognize the incredible work being done by our peers—projects that embody innovation, technical excellence, and a deep commitment to public safety and service. While our work may often blend into the background of the built environment, the SEE Awards shine a well-deserved spotlight on the ingenuity and dedication behind it.
I encourage all of you to join us next week as we celebrate these achievements. It is an opportunity not only to recognize outstanding projects, but also to reconnect with colleagues, be inspired by the creativity within our community, and reflect on the collective impact of our profession.
In the spirit of Sir Wren’s enduring message, I invite you to look around—not just at the structures themselves, but at the people behind them. Our legacy is all around us.
I look forward to celebrating it with you.
