Title: An Update on Prequalified Seismic Moment Connections in AISC 358

Abstract: Moment connections for used in Special or Intermediate Moment Frames need to be qualified per AISC 341. Of the two approaches permitted, one common practice is to use connections that have been prequalified by AISC’s Connection Prequalification Review Panel and incorporated into AISC 358, Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications. Since its first publication in 2005 with only two connections prequalified, the number of connections including some proprietary ones have increased to ten in Supplement 1 to AISC 358-16 published in 2018. This webinar will present the prequalification process, limitations, and general design process contained in the standard. Supplement 2 to be released later this year will also be highlighted.

Bio: Chia-Ming Uang is a Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. His research is on seismic analysis, large-scale testing, and design of steel structures. His work has also supported the prequalification of several moment connections in the AISC  358 standard. Uang received AISC’s Special Achievement Award in 2007, the T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award in 2015, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
