A Structural Engineer’s Role Post Disaster


The expertise of Structural Engineers is often called upon after a natural disaster to perform evaluations on buildings.  This expertise is useful in determining a building’s condition and identifying potential structural hazards which may pose a safety concern to building occupants.  During his career, Ian Mellor has performed evaluations on buildings after natural disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, floods, and rainstorms.  From these diverse experiences, Ian will share valuable lessons learned during the course of various post disaster damage evaluations. Some of the natural disaster events that Ian has performed structural evaluations for include:

Speaker Biography

Ian Mellor is a Principal Structural Engineer at Mellor Engineering with more than 18 years of professional experience in the design, detailing and evaluation of buildings.  He is a licensed Structural Engineer in California and also holds licenses in Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Virginia, New York, Louisiana and Mississippi.  He has been involved in a wide range of projects including, custom residential homes, commercial buildings, historic seismic retrofits, and Department of Defense (DoD) buildings for NAVFAC Southwest.  Ian also has extensive experience in forensic engineering for construction defects, cause and origin investigations for insurance claims, and in the evaluation and repair of buildings from various types of damage such as vehicle impacts and fires.
