President's Report

Welcome back members! I hope you enjoyed your summer. I am honored to serve the Structural Engineers Association of San Diego as President this year and I’m looking forward to a successful and eventful year ahead. There are so many great ways to get involved in our organization and I hope you will be inspired to give back to our amazing organization. Attending membership meetings, joining a committee, participating in our annual golf tournament, or submitting a project for an Engineering Excellence Award are just some of the ways to delve a little deeper into your membership . Our organization is only as robust as the members that participate and our goal is to make the San Diego chapter one of the strongest in California.

Speaking of participation, I would like to begin by thanking those who served the Board last year as well as offer a welcome to those who have committed to serving in the upcoming term.

A big THANK YOU to last year’s Board:

I also want to take the opportunity to recognize and thank Heather Caya, who will be continuing on as our Executive Director. Heather has done a great job being an ambassador to our membership.

As a reminder, the SEAOC Convention is coming up September 13-15 which will take place here in sunny San Diego.  The SEAOC Convention is an excellent opportunity to hear from a variety of technical experts in our field, enjoy organized social activities, and meet other structural engineers from across the industry.

The SEAOSD website has been newly updated! If you haven’t already, please visit www.seaosd.org to check on meeting details, job postings, organizational updates, technical resources, contact information, and more! Please make sure to login via the link that was provided in an email to confirm you properly receive future communications.

To kick off the year, our next member meeting is on Tuesday, September 19th during the dinner hour.  The topic is "Mass Timber Construction: Products, Performance and Design” and will be presented by Mike Romanowski, SE of Woodworks. Our regular monthly meetings will continue at Stone Brewery in Liberty Station; in an effort to accommodate the busy schedules of our members, we will rotate between holding meetings during the lunch hour and holding meetings throughout dinner. Do you have a suggestion for meeting topics this year? If so, please let Hung or any Board member know and we will work to incorporate your request.

As we start our 2017-2018 fiscal year, we look forward to providing our members with the greatest benefit possible. Please feel free to reach out to any Board member if you have any feedback on how the organization can better benefit your membership. If you haven’t done so already, please take the time to renew your membership on the new website.

Across the nation, communities are taking action to build their resilience to extreme events. As communities look to achieve more efficient and effective disaster risk reduction, opportunities exist for design professionals to help them advance their efforts using innovative and forward-looking technologies. For example, new structural materials and systems are emerging that are smart, connected, adaptive, sustainable and that will perform in a predictable manner. The question is how to best connect these advancements with community resilience objectives, outcomes, and goals. This workshop brings together representatives from the public, private, and academic sectors to explore the role that advanced technologies and design innovation can play in structural engineering and construction to promote more resilient communities as they prepare for the next hazard event and how to quickly recover afterwards.

This workshop will:
Explore the role of advanced technologies and structural performance data in existing infrastructure and built systems to enhance resilience and promote faster recovery;
Discuss the future role of advanced technologies and design practice in promoting community resilience --what does a resilient city’s built infrastructure look like in the future? and
Identify research gaps or opportunities in development and use of advance technologies and design for building resilient infrastructure.

We hope you will join us for this exciting event! If you have any questions, please contact: Maggie Esch at mesch@nas.edu.

Advertisement Policy

Dear Potential Sponsor/Donor:
The Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD) incorporated as a non-profit corporation on October 2, 1967, and has been serving San Diego Structural Engineers and the community ever since.  Our mission is to advance the structural engineering profession through the improvement of the quality of design and construction; to assist the public in obtaining professional structural engineering services; to promote natural hazard mitigation; to provide continuing education and encourage research; to provide Structural Engineers with the most current information and tools to improve their practice; and to maintain the honor and dignity of the profession.

On behalf of SEAOSD, I would like to formally invite you to participate in our advertising and sponsorship program.  Attached is our updated Advertising Policy that outlines a wide variety of options to choose from to fit your specific needs.  Given our association comprises over 300 members, this is an excellent opportunity to promote and reach out to the local engineering profession.  This includes job forum postings, displaying your business card in our Professional Directory, adding your company logo to our website, sponsoring one of our monthly member meetings, or participating in our annual golf tournament each spring.  There are also several sponsorship packages you may want to consider that offer discounted rates with a packaged deal.

I would like to emphasize that as a non-profit organization, your continued support is vital for our association to uphold our mission and advance the structural engineering profession.  This includes the ongoing work of our local and state committees ranging from structural standards development, sustainable design, public relations, advising local government, and business forum activities.  SEAOSD has also been heavily involved with student organizations, including job shadowing programs, awarding student scholarships, as well as hosting an annual “Student Night” that provides a unique opportunity for local college students to meet design professionals and learn more about the structural engineering profession.

If you would like to take advantage and benefit from these opportunities while also helping to strengthen our association, please contact our Executive Director, Heather Caya, at (619) 733-2734 or seaosd@cox.net.  Please note that the Annual Sponsorship Program extends during SEAOSD’s fiscal year from July 1 to June 30, and a 10% discount is available for all sponsorship payments received by September 15, 2017.

Thank you again in advance for your support of our association.

Sincerely,
Curtis Patterson, S.E.President
