President's Report

May President’s Address

Thank you all who came out to our joint meeting with EERI where we were provided lessons learned from the 2017 Mexico City Earthquake. Private firms, educational institutions, and research institutes sent reconnaissance teams to observe the damage and help local authorities with building assessments.  Members from three different organizations provided a debrief and lessons learned.  A special thank you to Jorge Meneses and SEAOSD members, Jeremy Callister and Darin Aveyard for the presentations.

Our next meeting is our annual Fellow’s lunch. The presentation will be; Oroville Dam Spillways: Incident and Recovery Project 2017, presented by Jesse Dillon.  Jesse Dillon is a Supervising Engineer with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR).    Assigned to respond and assess the damage to the flood control spillway at Lake Oroville when it first became apparent on February 7, 2017; Jesse will share his first-hand knowledge of the Oroville Spillway Emergency Response.  Jesse will present on the structural objectives and challenges experienced in the 2017 Oroville Spillways Recovery Project - Phase 1 which he served as Structures Design Team Lead and Engineer of Record.  I encourage all SEAOC Fellow and Life Members to attend!

Our Nominating Committee Chair, Michael Braund has done a wonderful job filling this year’s ballot with a roster of deserving candidates.  Our board has approved the candidates and ballots will be sent out to members for voting soon.  Thank you to all who put their hat in the ring to be representatives of our great organization.

2018 Marks SEAOSD’s 50 Year Anniversary!  The formation of the Structural Engineers Association of San Diego took place over a period of about 12 years beginning in the mid 1950’s.  At that time a small group of Structural Engineers in private practice began to meet for lunch occasionally for the purpose of exchanging views and discussing problems of mutual concern.  This group consisted of TOM ATKINSON, GEORGE BAUER, STANLEY BURNE, ROBERT FOGG, JOHN S. DANIELS and JOHN RUSKIN.  All of these engineers belonged to the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California, but seldom were able to attend the meetings which were held in downtown Los Angeles.

Interest in a San Diego organization for Structural Engineers increased and an enlarged group came into being encompassing most of the engineers in the San Diego area who were employed in a structural engineering capacity or who were interested as contractors, material suppliers or consultants in related engineering disciplines. The group was very informal, originally going by the name “Friends of Structural Engineering”, replaced later by the title of “Structural Engineers of San Diego”.  The group held regular monthly meetings and sponsored many programs of technical and professional interest to those in structural engineering practice.

By 1967, over ninety members were in the organization and it presented its qualifications to the Board of Directors of the Structural Engineers Association of California at its annual convention in September, 1967 at Lake Tahoe.  Shortly thereafter, SEAOSD formally came into being with ninety-one charter members.  Charles B. Hope was the first elected president, serving for the year 1968.

In recognition of our 50 Year Anniversary, our Board of Director’s are working on a gift for membership to celebrate the monumental achievement.

Thank You all for making SEAOSD such an inspiring association,

Thank You,

Curtis Patterson, S.E.

Advertisement Policy

Dear Potential Sponsor/Donor:
The Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD) incorporated as a non-profit corporation on October 2, 1967, and has been serving San Diego Structural Engineers and the community ever since.  Our mission is to advance the structural engineering profession through the improvement of the quality of design and construction; to assist the public in obtaining professional structural engineering services; to promote natural hazard mitigation; to provide continuing education and encourage research; to provide Structural Engineers with the most current information and tools to improve their practice; and to maintain the honor and dignity of the profession.

On behalf of SEAOSD, I would like to formally invite you to participate in our advertising and sponsorship program.  Attached is our updated Advertising Policy that outlines a wide variety of options to choose from to fit your specific needs.  Given our association comprises over 300 members, this is an excellent opportunity to promote and reach out to the local engineering profession.  This includes job forum postings, displaying your business card in our Professional Directory, adding your company logo to our website, sponsoring one of our monthly member meetings, or participating in our annual golf tournament each spring.  There are also several sponsorship packages you may want to consider that offer discounted rates with a packaged deal.

I would like to emphasize that as a non-profit organization, your continued support is vital for our association to uphold our mission and advance the structural engineering profession.  This includes the ongoing work of our local and state committees ranging from structural standards development, sustainable design, public relations, advising local government, and business forum activities.  SEAOSD has also been heavily involved with student organizations, including job shadowing programs, awarding student scholarships, as well as hosting an annual “Student Night” that provides a unique opportunity for local college students to meet design professionals and learn more about the structural engineering profession.

If you would like to take advantage and benefit from these opportunities while also helping to strengthen our association, please contact our Executive Director, Heather Caya, at (619) 733-2734 or seaosd@cox.net.  Please note that the Annual Sponsorship Program extends during SEAOSD’s fiscal year from July 1 to June 30, and a 10% discount is available for all sponsorship payments received by September 15, 2017.

Thank you again in advance for your support of our association.

Sincerely,
Curtis Patterson, S.E.President

The SE3 Survey is LIVE Now!

The SE3 Survey is LIVE NOW!

The NCSEA Structural Engineering Engagement and Equity (SE3) Committee is currently administering a nationwide survey of structural engineering professionals. This survey is designed to provide valuable information about our profession regarding demographics, compensation, satisfaction, and engagement. It will be one of the largest comprehensive nationwide surveys of structural engineering professionals to date, and we invite you to contribute to this project by completing the survey:

http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4135045/SE3-Survey-2018

This project began in 2015 when SEAONC (Structural Engineers Association of Northern California) funded a committee to study engagement and equity in the structural engineering profession. In 2016, this group administered their first national survey of over 2,100 structural engineering professionals. Findings from this study included insight into why engineers leave the profession, the importance of mentorship, and the existence of a nuanced gender pay gap. To read the full report or get a quick summary, check out: http://www.se3project.org/

In mid-2017, an SE3 Committee was created at the national level through NCSEA with the primary goal of administering a similar nationwide study of structural engineering professionals every two years. This biennial survey will focus on measuring engagement and equity with the goal of providing data and best practices to help ensure that every structural engineering professional has a positive experience within our profession.

Over the past seven months, we’ve been developing the 2018 version of this survey, and it is now live! We would love to have your input. If you’d like to participate, the link to the survey is also available on the SE3 website at ncsea.com/committees/se3.
