President's Report

February President’s Address

We’re approaching the second month of the New Year, which means there are still lots of new and exciting business opportunities brewing. Our membership is no exception to this and there are many new ways to get involved and foster a stronger professional network for the year ahead. Check out just a couple of new openings offered thus far:

  • The SEAOC Foundation: The SEAOC Foundation is a tax-deductible organization that will earmark personal contributions for our local chapter as requested. The Foundation is currently brainstorming special projects to fund and sponsor as well as ways to encourage donations for those projects. If you have a special knack for fundraising or maybe just ideas on where SEAOC could channel funds toward a project, please consider joining the Foundation’s Board as a SEAOSD representative.  The time commitment is limited for this opportunity.  Please reach out to me at president@seaosd.org if you are interested on being on the Foundation’s Board.

  • SEAOC Speaker’s Bureau: SEAOC is looking for a representative from our membership to serve as a speaker for various events throughout the year. The speaking engagements will be as-needed and will take place at schools, architectural associations, dinners, and the like. There will be plenty of lead time to prepare and the goal is to highlight the structural engineering field within these various organizations. If you feel comfortable in front of a crowd or would like to challenge yourself in a public speaking opportunity, please reach out to me for the volunteer opportunity.

It’s possible that new doors begin to open in ways you never thought possible just by leaning in to volunteerism. With organizations like ours, it really is true that you get back what you put in.

This month we will be hosting our annual Student Night which we expect to be a sold out event.  Student’s dinners and scholarships are paid for by the generous donations of our Organization’s Companies. If you are interested in being recognized as a Sponsor, please reach out to Steven Crook scrook@lpainc.com

SEAOSD EiSE Awards

SEAOSD Members: 2018 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards - Call For Entries

It’s not too early to start preparing for the 2018 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards!

Please click here to download the entry packet.

Entries are due Thursday April 26th, 2018

Reminders:

The SEAOSD Awards entry process has been combined with the state level SEAOC Awards program as of 2017.  This new integrated program is now a two-tiered process to truly reveal the best of the best of structural engineering excellence in California.

The SEAOC/SEAOSD Awards entry fee is $150.  No additional entry fee will be required for advancement to the SEAOC Awards.

SEAOSD is proud to announce a few key changes this year…

1)      Projects must be submitted to the SEAOC/SEAOSD Awards program.  There will no longer be a separate application for the SEAOC Awards including past regional award recipients not previously submitted to the state level.

2)      Projects that win an Award of Excellence only at the SEAOSD Awards will be automatically advanced to the SEAOC Awards program.  Awards of Merit recipients will no longer be considered at the state level.

3)      The entry categories have been consolidated into (6) categories at the regional level, eliminating the Sustainability and Landmark categories.  The state level entry categories are further consolidated into (3) categories as outlined in the entry packet.

For questions and additional information, see the entry packet and/or contact the Awards Committee Chair, at awards@seaosd.org.

SEAOSD Outreach Program

SEAOSD is looking for a volunteer to coordinate the “Engineer for a Day” mentorship program.  This individual will coordinate getting applications from potential Mentors and Mentees, reviewing applications for suitability, matching program participants, and doing follow up work.  This is a great job for someone wanting to inspire college engineering students.  If interested, please contact Sarah Witt at sarahwitt72@gmail.com.

Advertisement Policy

Dear Potential Sponsor/Donor:
The Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD) incorporated as a non-profit corporation on October 2, 1967, and has been serving San Diego Structural Engineers and the community ever since.  Our mission is to advance the structural engineering profession through the improvement of the quality of design and construction; to assist the public in obtaining professional structural engineering services; to promote natural hazard mitigation; to provide continuing education and encourage research; to provide Structural Engineers with the most current information and tools to improve their practice; and to maintain the honor and dignity of the profession.

On behalf of SEAOSD, I would like to formally invite you to participate in our advertising and sponsorship program.  Attached is our updated Advertising Policy that outlines a wide variety of options to choose from to fit your specific needs.  Given our association comprises over 300 members, this is an excellent opportunity to promote and reach out to the local engineering profession.  This includes job forum postings, displaying your business card in our Professional Directory, adding your company logo to our website, sponsoring one of our monthly member meetings, or participating in our annual golf tournament each spring.  There are also several sponsorship packages you may want to consider that offer discounted rates with a packaged deal.

I would like to emphasize that as a non-profit organization, your continued support is vital for our association to uphold our mission and advance the structural engineering profession.  This includes the ongoing work of our local and state committees ranging from structural standards development, sustainable design, public relations, advising local government, and business forum activities.  SEAOSD has also been heavily involved with student organizations, including job shadowing programs, awarding student scholarships, as well as hosting an annual “Student Night” that provides a unique opportunity for local college students to meet design professionals and learn more about the structural engineering profession.

If you would like to take advantage and benefit from these opportunities while also helping to strengthen our association, please contact our Executive Director, Heather Caya, at (619) 733-2734 or seaosd@cox.net.  Please note that the Annual Sponsorship Program extends during SEAOSD’s fiscal year from July 1 to June 30, and a 10% discount is available for all sponsorship payments received by September 15, 2017.

Thank you again in advance for your support of our association.

Sincerely,
Curtis Patterson, S.E.President

Other Announcements

The Structural Engineers Association of San Diego will be holding an Evaluator Training Session on Monday, April 9th, 2018 at the San Diego Environmental Services Department Auditorium.  This Evaluator Training will be for the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) Safety Assessment Program (SAP).  The SAP Evaluator Training provides experienced professionals to be Disaster Service Worker (DSW) Volunteers who can rapidly evaluate damaged structures after a natural disaster, such as earthquakes, flood and other natural disasters.  The SAP has been successfully used in responding to disasters and trained evaluators are essential to these efforts.  All licensed Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers, Architects, Geotechnical Engineers, Certified Building Officials and Certified Building Inspectors should become DSW Volunteers.  This is a great way to have the opportunity to provide a valuable public service after a natural disaster.  Registration will open soon for this event.
