President's Report

Thank you to all of our Members for voting in our annual elections.  July marks the turnover of the Board of Directors.  A special thank you to the Board members that have served our Organization and are now on to different roles.  Mike Braund has contributed countless hours to SEAOSD as a Board Member, Vice President, President, Past-President, SEAOC Representative, and his Committee involvement. Mike will surely be missed on the Board as he transitions out of Past-President.  Jeremy Callister has termed out of his Board Position and Peter Carlson has termed out as our Treasurer; thank you both for your commitment to our organization.  Luvelyn Benitez and Aaron Beebe will remain on the Board for another year and we look forward to their experience as we transition into the new year.  Steven Crook will take over the helm as President as I transition to Past-President.  A very warm welcome to our newly elected Board members: Casey Whitsett (Vice-President) Chad Closs (Treasurer), Jose Restrepo (Director), and Aaron Pebley we look forward to your leadership and perspectives on the Board.

Our last meeting of this fiscal year was held on June 19th at Stone Brewery Liberty Station, it was a well-attended annual Award’s Dinner.   Award’s Night is an opportunity for our community to appreciate the very best in Structural Engineering.  Congratulations to the winner’s and thank you for your presentations of your projects. At Award’s Night we took the opportunity to poll the attendees on interest in different presentation types.  We hope that this will facilitate presentations with maximum interest.

As a reminder there will be no general membership meetings in July or August, we will reconvene in September.  In the meantime, please make sure that you renew your membership by clicking on the received email or going to our website here: https://seaosd.starchapter.com/members.php .  This year’s convention will be held in Palm Desert at the very desirable JW Marriott Hotel.  If you have not already signed up, make sure to do so by July 31st for discounted pricing.  You can access the Convention site here: https://convention.seaoc.org/ .   For those of you seeking a stipend for attendance there are several opportunities; SEAOSD is offering $1,000 to two deserving candidates,   SEAOC is offering $750 to a deserving Younger Member, and there is also the Nabih Youssef Young Engineers (YEA) program.

If you have any feedback or want to get involved more next year please do not hesitate to reach out to me at curtis@pattersoneng.com . I look forward to representing you on the SEAOSD Board as Past-President and SEAOC’s Board next year.

Thank You all for making SEAOSD such an inspiring association,

Curtis Patterson, S.E.

The SE3 Survey is LIVE Now!

The SE3 Survey is LIVE NOW!

The NCSEA Structural Engineering Engagement and Equity (SE3) Committee is currently administering a nationwide survey of structural engineering professionals. This survey is designed to provide valuable information about our profession regarding demographics, compensation, satisfaction, and engagement. It will be one of the largest comprehensive nationwide surveys of structural engineering professionals to date, and we invite you to contribute to this project by completing the survey:

http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4135045/SE3-Survey-2018

This project began in 2015 when SEAONC (Structural Engineers Association of Northern California) funded a committee to study engagement and equity in the structural engineering profession. In 2016, this group administered their first national survey of over 2,100 structural engineering professionals. Findings from this study included insight into why engineers leave the profession, the importance of mentorship, and the existence of a nuanced gender pay gap. To read the full report or get a quick summary, check out: http://www.se3project.org/

In mid-2017, an SE3 Committee was created at the national level through NCSEA with the primary goal of administering a similar nationwide study of structural engineering professionals every two years. This biennial survey will focus on measuring engagement and equity with the goal of providing data and best practices to help ensure that every structural engineering professional has a positive experience within our profession.

Over the past seven months, we’ve been developing the 2018 version of this survey, and it is now live! We would love to have your input. If you’d like to participate, the link to the survey is also available on the SE3 website at ncsea.com/committees/se3.
